U-Boats and Submarines
THE HUNLEY
Mark K. Ragan, project historian for the recovery effort, has written perhaps the most complete history of the Hunley to date. During the height of America's Civil War, the small iron submarine prowled the coast of South Carolina searching for a Union warship. On the night of 17 Feb 1864, the H.L. Hunley became the first submarine to sink an enemy ship - a feat that would not be repeated until World War I!
The author worked as a diver in while the Hunley was being recovered. He has compiled a fantastic book complete with photos from the beginnings of the Hunley to the recovery effort.

All submarine sailors, whether German or American or Russian or Chinese, have one thing in common – extraordinary bravery. These men risked their lives in a violent world each time the set out to sea. Many didn’t come back. The statistics for the deaths of submariners in the World Wars speak for themselves. Dr. Robert D. Ballard, founder of the Titanic, writes: “As we descend into the darkness below, we must, if we are honest, acknowledge how fragile we are in this world. Simply put, we don’t belong there. It’s a world that wants to kill you and it can be a silent, invisible killer.”
This fascinating book chronicles the evolution of the submarine – from its meager beginnings in the 17th Century to the German U-Boats in World Wars I and II to the dawn of the nuclear submarine up to and including shocking text and images of the Kursk tragedy.
This book is brilliantly written and is stocked with archival pictures and documents, artwork, diagrams, and Skerry’s dramatic underwater images. Anyone interested in naval warfare – professors, divers, amateur naval historians, and naval enthusiasts will enjoy this book. This book is the definitive illustrated history of the submarine.

ON THE BOTTOM
On the night of September 25, 1925, the City of Rome rammed the U.S. Navy submarine S-51 off Block Island, Rhode Island. The S-51 sank in 132 fsw along with the lives of 33 sailors.
The U.S. Navy was in the middle of a public nightmare and had a serious public image problem due to the fact that the catastrophe of the S-51 was only one in a series of naval accidents in recent times. Due to public outrage the Navy determined that all costs must be made in order to salvage the S-51 even though the task was considered impossible. No sub was ever raised from such a depth.
This daunting task of raising the sub fell to Lieutenant Commander Edward Ellsberg and a group of divers scrounged from all over the Fleet. Over a terrifying and painstaking nine month period at sea, the men successfully raised the S-51.
This book was originally published in 1929. This reprinted Special Edition also includes a DVD of newsreel footage of “The Raising of the S-51” and an audio CD of an oral history by Edward Ellsberg and the period song “Sinking of the S-51.”

SHADOW DIVERS EXPOSED: THE REAL SAGA OF U-869
The U-869 was one of more than 1,200 U-boats that were constructed for the Nazi war machine. It was sunk off the American eastern seaboard by a combination hedgehog and depth-charge attack. There were no survivors to tell the tragic tale.
Now, for the first time, the real saga of the U-869 can be told in full. Archival documents have established that the U-boat was sunk by two American destroyer escorts. Seven crewmembers of those aggressive warships have supplemented the official record with their personal recollections.
Shadow Divers Exposed works on a multitude of levels. It presents the actual circumstances that surrounded the loss of the U-869. It puts the discovery of the U-869 into perspective with other U-boats that have been found in American waters. It provides an overview of the U-boat war through accounts of other U-boat losses. And it corrects some of the gross errors, wild exaggerations, and deliberate distortions that filled the pages of Shadow Divers.
The author interviewed a number of witnesses whose testimony contradicted the theatrical plot and boastful embellishments that formed the essential ingredients of Shadow Divers. Some of these witnesses actually performed the deeds for which the chosen protagonists of Shadow Divers were given credit. These witnesses disputed many of the fictitious elements that ran rampant through the pages of Shadow Divers.
By means of forensic analyses of shipwreck collapse, torpedo mechanics, and U-boat survivors’ accounts, the present volume explains why the U-869 could not have been sunk by a circular run of its own torpedo - as Shadow Divers had its uninformed readers believe.
