Stolen Heritage

This book has become the topic of a lot of controversy lately. It has been so controversial that I have considered removing it from the shelves, but it is quite popular.  I have strived to write a summary as I do for all the books sold on the site (I don't like to copy the description from the back of the book), but I think Gary states it the best: "This book is a story of conspiracy, double-dealing, lies, and deceit: an ugly trip through the political machinations of the City of Hamilton's corrupt bureaucrats, and the manipulations of individuals within the Ontario Archeaological License Bureau."

During the War of 1812, two US Navy warships - the Hamilton and the Scourge, foundered in Lake Ontario in a sudden deadly squall that took the lives of 70 American sailors. The wrecks are rotting on the bottom of Lake Ontario in 300ffw with hundreds of artifacts that are essential to the history of the United States waiting to be preserved.

This is the story of how Ontario and the City of Hamilton have blocked divers from diving the Hamilton and the Scourge and the immense pile of bull$#@& they make divers go through.

Primary Wreck Diving Guide

This is the first installment in a series of three books (Primary Wreck Diving Guide, Advanced Wreck Diving Guide, and the now defunct Ultimate Diving Guide, which has been transformed into the Technical Diving Handbook - which are also available at WreckDivingBooks.com). The latter two books intgroduce the experienced wreck diver to such topics as deep air diving, decompression, mixed gas diving and wreck penetration, while the Primary Wreck Diving Guide introduces the novice wreck diver to such introductory wreck diving topics as equipment modification, thermal protection, and basic wreck navigation and orientation.  Shipwreck photography and pharmacology are also discussed in terms that are easily understood.

Gary also delves into such topics as entaglement, equipment flooding, seasickness, getting lost at sea, and other grim worst-case-scenario topics that cannot be found in the major diving teaching authorities courses.

The book is extensively illustrated with color photographs as well as eight illustrations describing the evolution of shipwreck collapse ie. how shipwrecks get the way they do.

Deep, Dark, and Dangerous: Adventures and Reflections On the Andrea Doria

This book picks up where his groundbreaking work Andrea Doria: Dive to an Era ended.  This book covers an additional 15 years of explorations on the wreck encompassing from 1989 - 2004.

Gary recounts some death-defying penetrations deep into the Doria's interior including the elusive engine room dive with Steve Gatto.

Gary also examines the fatalities of 1998 and 1999 and has compiled death stats of divers on the wreck.

Gary also details the recovery of many items from the wreck. Of course, photos adorn.

USS San Diego
On July 19, 1918, the U.S.S. San Diego sank 11 miles south of Fire Island within sight of the American shore. With U-Boats lurking in the depths of nearby waters, a loud explosion was heard in the port engine room. With water rushing in the order was given to seal all watertight compartments. Assuming an attack by a nearby U-Boat, orders were given to depth charge the vicinity with 300 pound charges. The ship began to list towards port and this allowed the water to rush into the starboard engine room.

With the ship in danger from its own depth charges and men scrambling below decks in chaos trying to find their way in the complete darkness and gunners mates firing at anything that resembled a periscope in the water, the order was given to abandon ship. Within 20 minutes the ship turned completely upside down. Miraculously, only six sailors lost their lives.

What was a hellacious twenty minutes for all sailors involved turned out to be an underwater museum of artifacts and personal items from the First World War for wreck divers.

This book describes the history of the U.S.S. San Diego from not only its birth and trials at sea, but also its conception. There are also accounts of attempted salvage and detailed accounts of Gary’s dramatic penetrations into the wreck to gather some of the hundreds of photographs and artifacts seen in this book. With well over 150 dives on the San Diego, Gary is definitely the authority.

Controversy has recently erupted about what sank the San Diego. Some say it was a German saboteur, some say it was an explosion in the engine room, some even say that the San Diego struck a mine. Not only has controversy erupted over the cause of the sinking, but the San Diego has been in the news many times for divers that have lost their lives searching for artifacts.

Andrea Doria: Dive To An Era
The Andrea Doria. One of the most famous shipwrecks in the world. One of the most tragic maritime disasters. One of the greatest sea rescues in history. This is the story of the Doria, often referred to as the Mount Everest of scuba diving, after its collision with the Stockholm on April 25, 1956, written by the man who has over 200 dives on the Doria.

This is the story of the many who tried to raise her, of the many who tried to salvage her, and of the few men who braved the elements in the infancy of scuba diving to dive the Doria only 28 hours after the sinking. Interwoven throughout the rest of the book are dramatic images of china deep inside the Doria and the gripping account of the discovery of the ship’s bell, along with scores of artifacts recovered by the author including his now infamous descent and penetration into the ship’s store.

“The Andrea Doria is a ship that did not die upon sinking, but instead found new meaning.” – Gary Gentile

Great Lakes Shipwrecks Photo Album
Covering all five Great Lakes, including selections of Isle Royale National Park, Straits of Mackinac, and more, Gary has selected over 450 of his personal favorite photos to be published in this book. Gary calls the Great Lakes wrecks the “most photogenic”, “most spectacular to behold”, and the “most tragic”.

From deep penetrations into the forecastle to silhouettes of propellers against a sea of green, this book does not disappoint. Bathrooms, deadeyes, china, paintings, ornate figureheads, lanterns, engine rooms, electrical panels, and bronze bells grace the pages. The wrecks pictured here are not just steel-hulled iron ore wrecks, there are wrecks that were built in the 1790’s!

This book is for the once a year diver, every weekend diver, wreck diver, seasoned underwater explorer, and the old man down the street who traveled thousands of miles working aboard ship in the Great Lakes.

Battles for the USS Monitor
In 1860, the War Between the States erupted – warfare would never be the same. Many technological innovations would come out of that war, but perhaps the most important innovation would come to the forefront of naval warfare.
When the Union learned that the Confederate States had constructed the Virginia – an ironclad vessel specially designed to single-handedly destroy the Union fleet and the Northern charisma – the North quickly responded and built an ironclad of their own – the USS Monitor.

After their historic battle in 1862, in which neither vessel sustained significant damage nor inflicted significant damage on the other, both vessels went their separate ways not knowing of the historic impact their battle had left on the future of naval engagements. During the same year, the Monitor was lost off Cape Hatteras in a gale and the Virginia was destroyed to prevent capture by the Union Army. The Monitor and the Virginia may have survived the first battle of ironclads, but could not survive the war.

More than a hundred years after the loss of the Monitor, her badly disintegrating remains were discovered and identified by an expedition funded by Clive Cussler. A few months after the positive identification, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) declared the Monitor a National Marine Sanctuary. This sanction imposed by the Federal government prevented divers and historians from exploring the Monitor’s remains unless, of course, you were part of NOAA, even though the Nation Marine Sanctuary was established for the purposes of public awareness.

In 1984, perhaps the world’s most accomplished wreck diver, Gary Gentile, petitioned NOAA to dive the Monitor. A six year legal battle enraged, funded primarily out of his own pocket with Peter Hess as counsel.
In 1990, Gary’s efforts finally paid off as he was granted access to dive the Monitor - the 1990 People’s Expedition, a photographic expedition to document the Monitor as it was before the Monitor succumbed to the forces of the sea – a way that it will never be seen again.

Lusitania Controversies Vol.I
This two-volume series takes you to a place that has been seldom documented before – the history of deep wreck diving and the pioneers who braved the waters to advance the sport where it is today.

The first volume describes the life of the Lusitania from birth until its tragic loss in 1918 by the U-20 and chronicles the humble beginnings of wreck diving – at a time when divers were true explorers.

Interwoven throughout the book is a very honest and intense autobiography of Gary Gentile. He describes in great detail the origins of his passion for exploration, his tour of duty in Vietnam that resulted in a long and painful recovery, the beginnings of his diving career, and the harrowing tales of wreck penetrations gone wrong.

The first volume leaves the reader at the end of the 1970’s – the birth of decompression diving.

Lusitania Controversies Vol.II
Book Two picks up where Book One ends: at the start of the 1980’s with the expansion of wreck diving – often referred to as the decade of the Doria.

Again, Gary continues his honest and intense autobiography describing his brush with the bends, more harrowing escapes, death, friendships gone bad, and delves into the origins of mix gas diving, the discovery of the Billy Mitchell wrecks and many of the incredible and often fatal penetrations into the bowels of the Doria.

All of the details of the trials, tribulations, and hardships involved in the 1994 mixed gas expedition to the Lusitania are described here, as well as the many attempt to sabotage this epic expedition. The book doesn’t end here, but only begins as Gary makes a call for the next generation of wreck divers to make history in a quest to go ever deeper and to “take the torch” the pioneers of the sport have placed before us and not be held down by the limitations before us.

Nautical Cyclopedia
Honestly, if there is one book that is sold on wreckdivingbooks.com that I use on a consistent basis, and I mean use, not just sitting on the bookshelf collecting dust, this is it.

I always thought that since I was a wreck diver I knew the meanings and definitions of the vast components and parts of ships and could pick out objects underwater and explain to others where I was at inside the wreck based on mariner terminology – I was wrong. There are more to ships than just the bow, stern, and port and starboard sides. My understanding of mariner terminology was infantile at best.

This book is more than a dictionary (although each term has a definition), it is more than an encyclopedia (although each term is explained thoroughly), and more than just an illustrated text (although there are scores of great photographs). This book is a combination of all these with a few things that none of these reference materials have – underwater photographs and explanations in plain, easy to understand English. This is not a mariner’s manual or an oceanographer’s text.

This is an outstanding reference material for any diver, especially wreck divers or anyone with a penchant for the sea.

Technical Diving Handbook
Considered by many (myself included) to be the bible of technical diving. Gary has written a comprehensive volume of everything that is essential for extended range diving accented with detailed descriptions and hundreds of photographs. Also included are current descriptions of equipment and recent innovations that have only been in existence for a few years.

This book is an updated and expanded version of his classic Ultimate Wreck Diving Guide. There is no way that a detailed description of this book can do any justice without simply copying the table of contents – which would take up four pages. This book includes detailed descriptions and tips of how to properly use and operate 57 pages of gear, underwater communications devices, diver propulsion vehicles, decompression computers and tables, rebreathers, and detailed instructions of how to build decompression stations.

Also included are instructions for expedition diving and how to properly clean regulators and tanks for oxygen service. Nitrox, helium, and oxygen gases are discussed in detail.

If you are interested in beginning technical diving or already are a technical diver, this book is for you. Every diver can learn from this book.

U-869.jpg

SHADOW DIVERS EXPOSED: THE REAL SAGA OF U-869

The U-869 was one of more than 1,200 U-boats that were constructed for the Nazi war machine. It was sunk off the American eastern seaboard by a combination hedgehog and depth-charge attack. There were no survivors to tell the tragic tale.

Now, for the first time, the real saga of the U-869 can be told in full. Archival documents have established that the U-boat was sunk by two American destroyer escorts. Seven crewmembers of those aggressive warships have supplemented the official record with their personal recollections.

Shadow Divers Exposed works on a multitude of levels. It presents the actual circumstances that surrounded the loss of the U-869. It puts the discovery of the U-869 into perspective with other U-boats that have been found in American waters. It provides an overview of the U-boat war through accounts of other U-boat losses. And it corrects some of the gross errors, wild exaggerations, and deliberate distortions that filled the pages of Shadow Divers.

The author interviewed a number of witnesses whose testimony contradicted the theatrical plot and boastful embellishments that formed the essential ingredients of Shadow Divers. Some of these witnesses actually performed the deeds for which the chosen protagonists of Shadow Divers were given credit. These witnesses disputed many of the fictitious elements that ran rampant through the pages of Shadow Divers.

By means of forensic analyses of shipwreck collapse, torpedo mechanics, and U-boat survivors’ accounts, the present volume explains why the U-869 could not have been sunk by a circular run of its own torpedo - as Shadow Divers had its uninformed readers believe.
